Broad Creek dredge project starts

This dredge pipeline hooks into the pipe that runs under General Puller Highway that was installed years ago to feed a spoil site owned by Middlesex County. The pipe under the road was not found in the beginning of the process and had county officials concerned that it would take $200,000 to have it reinstalled. Fortunately it was found and those funds were not needed in addition to $1,471,600 that the project is costing. The project is being funded by the Virginia Port Authority. (Photo by Larry Chowning)

The long-awaited Deltaville Broad Creek dredging project has started, reported an official of Seaward Marine, the firm that was hired by the county to dredge the creek.

The county has been awarded a $2.3 million Virginia Port Authority grant for Seaward Marine to dredge up to 28,300 cubic yards at a cost of $52 per cubic yard of materials from Broad Creek and the Rappahannock River. The project is estimated to cost $1,471,600.

Supervisors are hopeful the work is completed as soon as possible as to have minimal interruption during Deltaville spring and summer boating season, said Walker.
