Middlesex High School discus throw record had stood for three decades

A 30-year-old Middlesex High School track record fell Wednesday, March 26, as Charger Nielson McMinn had a discus throw of 150 feet, 8 inches in a six-team meet at King & Queen (K&Q) Central High School.
McMinn broke Ajani Ruffin’s 146 feet, 3 inch state championship throw that he made in 1995. That year Ruffin and Lady Charger Sharon Boyd won the boys and girls state championship in the discus.
McMinn’s throw of 150 feet, 8 inches shattered Ruffin’s record and elevated him to one of the top discus throwers in the Virginia Class 1 state. McMinn had already qualified for the state meet in May last week at the Charles City Invitational.
Middlesex had two other athletes to qualify for the state meet at K&Q. Iyana Jenkins won the 300 intermediate hurdles in a state qualifying time of 51.40 and Davonte Griffin won the high jump with a 5 foot, 10 inch state qualifying jump.
