Middlesex notches two softball wins

MHS dominates Northumberland and Lancaster

The Middlesex High School Lady Charger softball team opened up its 2024-2025 season with two home regional wins against Northern Neck district teams. Middlesex defeated the Northumberland Lady Indians 9-3 on Tuesday, March 18; and also defeated the Lancaster Lady Red Devils 11-1 on Friday evening.

Middlesex 9, Northumberland 3

In a matchup of last year’s regional semifinal game, the Lady Chargers would again defeat the visiting Northumberland Indians in Saluda. Excellent pitching on both sides would prevail in the first inning as both teams were retired in order.

Northumberland threatened in the top of the second, loading the bases with no outs, but Lady Charger pitching ace Magen Daniels would strike out the next three batters to strand the runners. Middlesex would get on the board in the bottom of the second and take a 3-0 lead.

Middlesex would plate another run in the bottom of the third on triples off the bats of freshmen Rylee Buck and Lailah Baylor to take a 4-0 lead. Northumberland answered back in the top of the fifth to make the score 4-2, Middlesex.

Neither team scored again until the sixth inning when the Lady Chargers broke the game open. An errored ball off the bat of Kyla Blazek and three consecutive walks drawn by Magen Daniels, Cheyenne Musick and Rylee Buck, a fielder’s choice from Libby Oliver, and a single by Courtney Jessie would score five more runs before the inning was over and Middlesex took a 9-2 lead into the seventh and final inning.

Northumberland would get one more run in the top of the seventh to make the final score 9-3.
