Church Briefs: March 20, 2025

The Middlesex County Literary Union Session will convene at Immanuel Baptist Church in Saluda on Sunday, March 30, at 10 a.m.

There will be two special guests on this Sunday. The first is Dr. Carl Eggleston of Farmville, a Democrat, plans to announce his candidacy on June 13 for the position of lieutenant governor for the state of Virginia. He is a graduate of John Tyler Community College in Chester, St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, and has two doctoral degrees.

The second is Kevin Gentry, executive director of the Broadband Authority in Middlesex County, who will share much needed information concerning the extension of Broadband in the Jamaica District.

The message for the day will be delivered by the pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church, the Rev. Dr. John C.Wright Jr.

The adult Sunday school lesson is entitled, “The Day of Atonement” and the background scripture, Leviticus 16:15-19 verses.

The Pastor’s Aid of Make-A-Way Church, Urbanna, will have a Rainbow Service on Sunday, March 23, at 3 p.m. Music will be rendered by The Men of Faith of Make-A-Way, Zion Branch Choir and Total Commitment.

Colors to wear: red, white, blue, green and purple.

Lower United Methodist Church (LUMC), 20 Lower Church Road, Hartfield, invites everyone to join them in the LUMC Fellowship Hall on Sunday at 9:15 a.m. for Coffee Fellowship followed by adult Sunday school at 9:30 a.m.

Worship will be offered in our historic sanctuary at 10:30 a.m.

The community is invited to stop by LUMC Fellowship Hall every Wednesday between 7:30-9 a.m. for free, delicious, hand-crafted coffee or hot chocolate from the God’s Aroma coffee ministry.

Escobrook Baptist Church in Mascot will celebrate its ushers anniversary on  Sunday, Apr. 6, at 4 p.m. The special guest will be the Soul Seekers from Richmond.

Voices of Calvary of Calvary Baptist Church, Saluda, will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Sunday, March 23, at 3 p.m. The special guest will be MGM Tri-County Choir under the direction of Elder John Smith. All are welcome.


Zion Hill Baptist Church, 10256 Indian Road, Gloucester, will have in-person worship service on Sunday, March 23 at 11 a.m. Pastor Eugene Comithier II will preach and his Male Chorus will sing.

In-person Sunday school will be offered at 9:45 a.m.

Endowment Fund scholarships available through Urbanna United Methodist Church include the Elliott and Elizabeth Richardson Memorial Scholarships, the Frances R. Parker Memorial Scholarships, and the James Welton Taylor Memorial Scholarships.

Students who are graduating from a high school in Middlesex County and are planning to attend a college, university or technical school, as well as Middlesex students currently in college, may apply for a scholarship through the endowment funds at Urbanna United Methodist Church (UUMC).

These scholarships are available for one year only, may not be renewed, and are for those individuals who are pursuing a higher education, have exhibited a potential for becoming a self-supporting and productive citizen, and need financial assistance to make this possible.

Scholarship applications for high school students are available at the Middlesex High School Guidance Office and Christchurch School Guidance Office. Applications for students currently in college are available by contacting the UUMC office (urbannaumc@va.metrocast.net or 804-758-5308).

All applications must be completed and submitted as one package no later than April 10. Applications may be taken to the Middlesex High School Guidance Office, Christchurch School Guidance Office, or mailed (postmarked no later than April 10) to: UUMC Scholarship Committee Facilitator, Urbanna United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 217, Urbanna, VA 23175.


Have you lost a spouse and are seeking support and coping skills during your time of grief and loss? An Urbanna Baptist Church (UBC) program to address this consists of a video presentation, group support, and a devotional and guide.

You can participate at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at UBC Fellowship Hall.

The registration fee is $10 and includes a participant guide. Register online at GriefShare.org/Findagroup.
