Urbanna Town Council amends budget to buy town hall property

On Feb. 13 following a required public hearing at which no one spoke, the Urbanna Town Council amended fiscal year (FY) 2024-2025 budget appropriating all remaining American Rescue Plan Act (“ARPA”) funds of $237,600, and funds from the sale of the old town hall of $234,000 to the purpose of acquisition of the new town hall property.

On Feb. 22, 2024, Council approved purchase of the new town hall for $1.1 million from  Thurston Properties LLC which has agreed to finance $541,000 for 15 years at 5% interest.

The town has not made the purchase final.

Town Councilor Alana Courtney, who was the sole vote against the motion to amend the budget, said she was “vehemently opposed” to the purchase of the new town hall.

Voting in favor of the budget amendment were councilors Marjorie Austin, Larry Chowning, Merri Hanson, Robbie Wilson, and Mayor Bill Goldsmith. Councilor Beth Justice was absent from the meeting.
