Two highway roundabouts are planned for Twiggs Ferry Road (Route 3) about three miles from each other.
- One roundabout, fully funded for $6.7 million, will be near Hartfield at the intersection of Twiggs Ferry Road (Route 3) and Stampers Bay Road (Route 630), which is used by those going to or from Deltaville. The intersection is just north of Doc Jones Used Auto Parts.
- The other roundabout will be in Mathews County at the intersection of Twiggs Ferry Road and Buckley Hall Road (Route 198) and will cost $7.8 million. This intersection is where the Fas Mart is located and is the primary route for those traveling from Mathews to Middlesex County. There is considerable left turn traffic with motorists turning onto Twiggs Ferry Road.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) plans to advertise for construction bids for both roundabouts in August 2028.
Both roundabouts are fully funded through VDOT’s SMART SCALE program, said Kelly Hannon, Communications Manager for VDOT Fredericksburg District.
Both Middlesex and Mathews counties submitted applications for these roundabouts to be funded through Virginia’s SMART SCALE transportation funding program, she added.
