Supervisors have voted to have a state historic county line highway marker replaced with a new updated sign.

Supervisors voted to expend $3,500 to replace the sign — one of the original Middlesex historic road signs erected in the early 1930s. Established in 1926, Virginia’s Historical Highway Marker Program is one of the oldest in the nation.

Middlesex County Administrator Matt Walker informed the board that he had received a citizen’s complaint that the historic road sign was in poor condition and needed replacing.

The sign is located in Laneview in the Jamaica District right at the Middlesex/Essex county line. “This is what people see when they enter our county on (U.S.) Route 17,” said Jamaica District Supervisor Wayne Jessie. “We need to replace it with a new version.”

The sign also has an incorrect date that the county was founded, yet right behind it is a new sign with the correct founding year of 1668. For generations the date of 1673 was used as the established date of the county. Middlesex County’s colonial records in the courthouse in Saluda that go back to 1673, which resulted in that date being used for generations as the established date.
