With two Tidewater District wins last week, the Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity basketball team is vying for the regular season Tidewater District title with Mathews. The Blue Devils have a 10-1 district record and Middlesex has a 9-1 district record. The teams have defeated each other once each this season. The Chargers have two more district games to play, while the Blue Devils have one before the regular season ends.

Middlesex’s varsity had three wins last week to raise its overall win-loss record to 14-5 and 9-1 in Tidewater District play with wins over Nandua, 73-30; West Point, 69-50; and Charles City, 62-32.

Nandua

In the 73-30 win over Nandua on Friday, Feb. 7, Nielson McMinn paced the Chargers on offense with 18 points. McMinn towered over the Nandua players and most of his points came off of offensive rebound put backs. Most of the fourth quarter was played by the bench as MHS dominated the game from the start over the Warriors.

Charles City

Against Charles City on Jan. 30, the Chargers jumped to a 25-4 first quarter lead and never looked back. J. Griffin was high scorer for the Chargers with 20 points and D. Griffin had 18 points.

West Point

The Chargers defeated the West Point Pointers by 69-50 on Feb. 4. The Pointers scored 20 points in the second quarter, the only quarter West Point was to play competitive with Middlesex.

The Chargers faced three more regular season games at press time.
