Change orders continue to raise the cost of renovating the old Puller Center building into the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office headquarters at Cooks Corner.

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors voted, 4-1, at its Tuesday, Jan. 7, regular monthly meeting to approve four change orders on the construction of the building amounting to $41,888.

Supervisors Chairman Don Harris voted against the change orders. Harris noted that he was unhappy with the continued increase in cost of the sheriff’s headquarters project.

Since the start of the renovation, Norman Company Inc. of Mechanicville has had supervisors approve $218,895 of change orders or approximately 6% of the original $3.3 million bid made by Norman to do the job.

Supervisors approved $61,051 in September 2024, another $75,159 in October, and $40,797 in November. It was estimated in 2022 that the cost of the project would be about $3.7 million, so the board considered Norman’s bid of $3.3 million a good price. The change orders, however, have brought the cost over $3.5 million, but still under the 2022 estimated cost.
