As part of the ongoing educational outreach from the Middlesex County Museum to local schools, the history students of Nicole Ambrose at Middlesex High School spent time before their winter break touring the Middlesex County Historic Courthouse buildings and grounds.
The class looked at the procedure of going to court and what exactly a historic court day entailed. The students began to understand the process of keeping the legal records of life in Middlesex: marriages, deeds, transfers of land, wills, manumissions and court legal proceedings.
They also studied the architectural design of the building and discussed the three-year building process of erecting the building that was completed in 1852. As an example of the Virginia temple-form, this arcaded courthouse contains rounded arches, pediments, a lunette, loggia and brickwork done in a Flemish bond pattern. All was contained in their finished sketches of the building.
As an ongoing exhibit of the Middlesex County Museum, the clerk’s office is open to the public 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and is found in the historic courthouse square in Saluda.
