Have you or a loved one recently been diagnosed with cancer, or are you undergoing treatment or in a post-treatment phase? Do you wish you could talk confidentially with others who are on or have been on the same cancer journey as you to learn about their experiences?

A support/fellowship group is now offered in Kilmarnock to address these needs of cancer patients and their caregivers. Far from a “doom and gloom” group, current members describe the sessions as “uplifting,” “caring,” and sometimes “comical.”

As one member described the group, “The people here ‘get it.’ I can talk about what I am going through, my thoughts and feelings, without being a burden to anyone. They completely understand my ups and downs because they are going through or have gone through the same thing.”

“This group is my safety valve – it releases the pressure within me that builds up when I can’t talk to anyone about how I am feeling.”

The group is hosted by Cleve Corlett, PhD, a stage four melanoma survivor who underwent radiation, chemo and immunotherapy.

“Our goal is to have everyone leave our discussions feeling a little better than when they walked in. At the very least, they’ll have a few more friends.

Sessions are offered at Grace Episcopal Church at 303 S. Main St. in Kilmarnock on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. and are open to everyone, wherever they are on their cancer journey and whatever their faith.
