MHS’s JaQuan Griffin named Dist. Offensive Player of Year

Middlesex High School’s (MHS) JaQuan Griffin was named Tidewater District Offensive Player of the Year, along with taking first team all-district and all-region honors at running back, kick returner, defensive back and punt returner. He was also named All-District as an all-purpose running back.

During the season, J. Griffin broke five MHS Charger longtime football school rushing records as he broke four 33-year-old records held by the famed Buck Bagby. J. Griffin rushed for 1,802 yards to break Bagby’s 1,575 season record. He had 32 touchdowns to break Bagby’s 27 TD mark. J. Griffin had 28 rushing touchdowns, 2 pass receptions for TDs, one kickoff return for a touchdown and he passed for one touchdown.

He also erased Bagby’s record of 240 yards rushing in a game. J. Griffin rushed for 358 yards in a game and 320 in another. He broke the five touchdown record in a game held by Bagby (1991) and Wayne Jessie (1979). The MHS running back scored seven touchdowns in one game and six in another.

J. Griffin also erased the 2006 MHS record of 11.6 yards per carry held by Charles Curtis. J. Griffin broke Curtis’ record by registering a 12.6 yards per carry mark.

His stats for the season were 217 rushing carries for 1,849 yards and 28 touchdowns. He caught four passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns; passed for two for two and registered one touchdown, had 225 yards and 1 touchdown on six kickoff returns, and had 10 successful extra 2-point run conversions.

On defense, J. Griffin had 31 solo tackles, 24 assists, one interception, three fumble recoveries and one fumble return for a Charger touchdown.

Other Chargers to make the Tidewater District All-Conference team were first team offensive lineman, Peyton Calhoun; first team receiver, linebacker and defense all purpose player, Davonte Griffin; first team defensive lineman and second team center, Luke McMurtrie; second team defensive back, Shane Glenn; second team offensive lineman, Andrew Harrow; and second team linebacker, Nathan Powell.

J. Griffin was first team all-region at running back, defensive back, punt returner and second team kick returner; D. Griffin, second team receiver and linebacker; and McMurtrie, second team center.
