MHS hoop boys stop Northumberland, 67-64

The Middlesex High School (MHS) Charger varsity basketball team launched its new season Tuesday, Dec. 3, with a 67-64 victory over the Northumberland Indians in a non-conference game in the John S. Clements Memorial Gymnasium.

The Chargers scored 23 points in the first quarter as 6’ 6” center Nielsen McMinn dominated the boards scoring 14 points in the quarter with most coming from put backs off of offensive rebounds under the basket. McMinn scored 20 points in the game.

The Indians, however, kept the game close the entire way with the half-time ending 34-30. Whenever Northumberland appeared to be catching MHS, JaQuan Griffin would score with a strong drive to the basket. J. Griffin was high scorer in the game for Middlesex with 22 points.

Shane Glenn scored 9 points knocking down a single 3-pointer. The Chargers had seven 3-pointers in the game as Dereon Cooke knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter. Donovan Jones came off the bench to knock down a pair of 3-pointers and J. Griffin and McMinn had a single 3-pointer each.

Henry Fleet provided some good defensive minutes off the bench and Davonte Griffin scored 4 points on offense and provided strong ball handling in the final minutes of the game to contribute to the Chargers win.
