The Middlesex High School (MHS) football team ran into a wall of Trojan offense and defense on Friday in the Region A semi-final football tournament at Essex High School as the Trojans crushed MHS, 72-0.
The weather was cold and windy with a mist of rain coming down, off and on, throughout the game. Middlesex Athletic Director Matt Stamm, standing on the sideline before the game, praised the Chargers football program for making it to the semi-finals. “It has been a long time since we have advanced this far in the tournament,” he said.
The Chargers advanced to the Region A semi-final by upsetting the Northampton Yellow Jackets, 36-34, on Northampton’s home field Friday, Nov. 15, and MHS finished the season with a winning, 7-5, win-loss record.
“Essex has one of the top football programs in the state,” said Stamm. “Maybe the weather will come into play and give us a chance.”
That did not happen, as the Trojans raced up and down the field on offense, scoring at will, mostly behind the running of halfback Jaden Holmes. The halftime ended with a 58-0 Essex lead.
There were a few highlights for MHS as quarterback Shane Glenn completed a 25-yard pass to JaQuan Griffin, where Griffin was able to show off some of his athleticism, but fumbles and intercepted passes kept the offense off the field and the defense could not stop the hard-running Trojan offense.
Even with such a crushing defeat, the Middlesex High School 2024-2025 football season with a 7-5 win-loss record and a trip to the Region A semi-final has been one of the better Charger football seasons in 20 years.
