MHS FOOTBALL ADVANCES TO REGION SEMI-FINALS

Middlesex downs Northampton 36-34 in away quarter-final matchup

The Middlesex High School (MHS) Charger football team (7-3, 4-0) upset Northampton High School, (8-3) in the quarterfinals of the Region A football tournament in Eastville Friday, 36-34.

The win was a surprise as the Chargers had lost to the Yellow Jackets, 42-18, in the regular season contest and Northampton was the number three ranked team in Region A. Middlesex was ranked sixth in Region A.

With the win over the Yellow Jackets, the Chargers advanced into the Region A semi-finals and will play the number two ranked Essex High School Trojans (10-1, 4-1) at Essex on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Northampton jumped to a 14-point lead in the first quarter and were up 21-12 at half-time. Middlesex outscored the Yellow Jackets 24-13 in the second half to squeak by with a 2-point victory.

Other region action

Essex defeated West Point in the quarter-finals, 64-0, to advance to the region semi-finals and Rappahannock High School of Warsaw defeated the King & Queen Central Royal Tigers, 53-13 to advance.

Rappahannock will play Westmoreland High School, which advanced to the semi-finals with a 33-6 win over the Northumberland High School Indians.
