For 135 years the Donovan Masonic Lodge #75 has stood at the corner of Ballpark Road and General Puller Highway (Route 33) in Deltaville.
Efforts are under way to see that this landmark is preserved. This month, the spire is being clad in copper, that gleams in the bright sunlight. Copper is a very stable metal that will last for decades. After many years the copper will develop a green patina, like that seen on historic statues such as the Statue of Liberty.
Only the spire and its base will be copper clad. The main roof will be replaced with metal finished in dark green, said Bob Lackey, a Donovan Lodge #75 member, who in 2015 completed a history of the Lodge’s first 128 years.
The roof of the building erected in 1889 was last replaced in 1948.
