The Middlesex High School (MHS) Charger football team (4-3, 2-0) defeated Tidewater District foe Charles City, 66-28, as JaQuan Griffin broke his own school record of six TDs by scoring eight touchdowns in the MHS win. Earlier in this season J. Griffin broke the 45-year MHS touchdown school record held by Wayne Jessie, who scored five touchdowns in a game in 1979. Against Charles City, J. Griffin also scored 54 of the Chargers 66 points in the game.

The MHS senior scored seven rushing touchdowns and another on a 70-yard kick-off return. J. Griffin rushed for an astounding 358 yards on 19 carries averaging 18.9 yards a carry.

The Charles City Panthers were unable to stop the Chargers as MHS had a total of 410 offensive yards. Others to contribute on offense were senior Nathan Powell, who scored a touchdown on an eight-yard run, made good on two 2-point conversions, caught a 20-yard pass from quarterback Shane Glenn and scored a total of 10 points. Also, Jamar Hammond caught a pass from Glenn for a 2-point conversion. J. Griffin scored three 2-point conversions.

Davonte Griffin and Powell paced the Chargers on defense with each getting a pass interception. D. Griffin had seven solo tackles and one assist and Powell had four solos and two assists.

Others to contribute on defense were Payton Calhoun with three solos and three assists; Cole Heath, four solos, one assist; Hammond, four solo tackles; Luke McMurtrie, three solos, one assist; Travis Archer, three solos, one assist; Glenn and Lucien Hampton, two solo tackles each; J. Griffin, Talon Busic, and Andrew Harrow, one solo, one assist each; and Tristan and Cash Steel, one solo tackle each.

The Chargers have a week off this week, but will take on the King & Queen Central Royal Tigers at home on Thursday, Oct. 31, at the Syd Thrift Athletic Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The game, the Tidewater District championship matchup, is scheduled a day earlier than usual due to the Urbanna Oyster Festival.
