Becoming a bishop

The Imposition of the Hands is conducted by Archbishop Mark Haverland on Father Jeffrey S. Johnson of Saluda earlier this month at St. Alban’s Anglican Church in Richmond for receiving the anointing of the Holy Spirit for the office and work of a bishop in the church. (Contributed)

The laying on of hands for consecrating a bishop is a continuation in an unbroken line of bishops going back to the first apostles. For example, Timothy was made the first bishop of Ephesus by the laying on of hands by St. Paul. (2 Timothy 1:6)

Fr. Jeff Johnson, now Bishop Johnson, has been the priest at All Saints Anglican Church in Saluda for more than 10 years and will remain there in addition to some amount of travel in his new position as Bishop Ordinary.

Although Bp. Jeff, as he is now affectionately called by his congregation, grew up in Louisiana, Texas and Germany, he has deep roots in Virginia. His ancestors came to the Northern Neck in the mid-1600s and some of them were married at Christ Church in the Christchurch community. One ancestor even served as an Anglican priest along the Piankatank River and in Poquoson in the late 1800s.

All are welcome to join Bp. Jeff and the congregation for adult Bible study at 10 a.m. every Sunday and Holy Communion beginning at 11:15 a.m. The service is followed by a joyous coffee hour of fellowship.
