The Middlesex County Public Library (MCPL) system recently announced its latest art exhibit at its Deltaville branch. It features rug hooking art by Melissa MacKimm, on display now through the beginning of November. The public is invited to a reception on Monday, Oct. 21, from 4-6 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and the artist will be on hand to discuss her work.
MacKimm has been working in the art form since 2010. “As a collector of primitive antiques, I loved hooked rugs at antique shows” she says, “but I could never afford them.” To remedy this, she took up classes and workshops to make her own. “It’s really addictive,” she says. A single rug can take several months to finish.
Melissa MacKimm primarily works in the style of New England’s primitive rug hooking artists, though she also experiments with more vivid color schemes. In fact, she says, “the most challenging aspect is color planning.” Wool is the primary material used, much of which is hand-dyed using a variety of techniques.
The display can be visited during the MCPL Deltaville branch’s open hours, which are Monday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Everyone is invited to the reception on Monday, Oct. 21, from 4-6 p.m.
