Charger JaQuan Griffin explodes for 32 of 38 points in MHS football homecoming victory over Pointers

The Middlesex High School (MHS) Charger football team (3-3, 1-0) defeated West Point Pointers, 38-19, Friday night at the MHS homecoming activities to win its first Tidewater District game of the season. The Chargers scored 22 fourth quarter points to run away with the game.

The Chargers wore pink uniforms during the game to bring focus to the month of October as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” said MHS Athletic Director Matt Stamm at the game Friday night. “We all felt it was a good cause and parents purchased the uniform so after the season players will have them to take home,” he said.

Against West Point, Middlesex was offensively paced by JaQuan Griffin, who rushed for 145 yards and scored five touchdowns on 11 carries. All five touchdowns came on runs as the MHS senior scored on an 18-yard run, two-yard run, 30-yard run, eight-yard run and a 54-yard run.

Nathan Powell also contributed on offense rushing for 46 yards and scoring 4 points on two successful 2-point conversions and Davonte Griffin scored on a 2-point conversion. J. Griffin also scored on a rushing 2-point conversion and he scored a total of 32 of the Chargers 38 points.

Defense

MHS quarterback Shane Glenn had four completed passes for 68 yards. D. Griffin had three completions for 50 yards and Powell caught a pass for 18 yards.

D. Griffin, J. Griffin, Luke McMurtrie, Hayden Brown and Travis Archer paced the Chargers defense. D. Griffin had eight solo tackles and one assist; J. Griffin, five solos, three assists; McMurtrie, three solos, four assists; and Brown and Archer had three solo tackles and three assists each.

Others to contribute on defense were Jesus Crowder and Cole Heath, four solo tackles and one assist each; Glenn, three solos, one assist; JaMar Hammond, two solos, two assists; Powell, one solo, three assists; Andrew Harrow and Payton Calhoun, two solos, one assist each; and Colby Conti, two assists.

Coming up

The Chargers will travel to Charles City (0-5) on Friday to take on the Panthers in a Tidewater District matchup. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
