Diane French Ward

Diane French Ward, 72, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024.

Diane was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend.

She was born January 14, 1952, in Richmond, the daughter of the late William “Bill” Crawford French Sr. and the late Virginia Walden Spencer.

Diane graduated from the Collegiate School and Longwood University. Upon graduation, she worked as an elementary school teacher before taking on what she felt was the most important role of her life — that of a devoted, loving mother.

Diane had many hobbies that brought her joy, including listening to her favorite musicians, creating beautiful needlepoint works and playing mahjong with friends. Diane’s passion for decorating with bold colors made her house a true reflection of her spirit — an inviting place where family and friends always felt welcomed. She loved every minute spent with her two, adorable grandchildren and cherished their visits to the Northern Neck. Vacationing with family was another treasured pastime.

Diane had a great sense of humor and what she loved most of all was to laugh with family and friends. She went to her first comedy club in July — she had a blast and even got to meet the comedian.

Lastly, her love for animals was evident in the special bond she shared with the many pets she adopted through the years. Her compassion for all creatures great and small was a testament to her gentle soul.

She is survived by her husband, James “Jimmy” Henry Ward Jr.; her children, James Henry “Hank” Ward III (Sarah), Caroline Walden Ward; her grandchildren, James Henry Ward IV, Vivianne Marie Ward; her siblings, Lynn French Hancock (Ben), William “Bill” Crawford French Jr. (Meg); and her nephews and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her nephew, John Samuel “Sam” Hancock.

Diane’s laughter, warmth and love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to www.GarfieldsRescue.org or your preferred charitable organization benefiting animals in need.

A celebration of life to honor Diane will be planned at a later date.
