It is with heavy hearts that we share that our beloved mother, Ellen Rowlson-Hall, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024.
Ellen was a devoted mother, grandmother, and wife, and will be missed dearly. She is survived by her husband, Howard; her two daughters, Addison and Celia, their spouses; and six grandchildren.
A public school teacher for 45 years, she dedicated her life to enriching the lives of young minds, and inspired in many a passion for learning, and especially for French. In her youth, she traveled the world with her cousin in a VW “bug,” and slept under the stars in olive groves, beaches and deserts. And when this same cousin said the roads of Middlesex County reminded her of the French countryside, Ellen came to visit and never looked back. She became a school teacher at Middlesex High School, fell in love with a fellow teacher, Howard, and they raised their two daughters on Urbanna Creek.
They moved to Lynchburg to support Celia’s growing passion for dance, and settled into a wonderful community, where soon Addison and her family would join them. A practicing Christian Scientist, she was dedicated to her faith, which carried her through to the end. She was a true patron of the arts, of progressive heart and mind, bird lover, Francophile, and nature conservationist.
Her favorite place on earth was the very edge of the Urbanna Creek, watching the blue herons stalk the water’s surface. She was one of a kind, and stayed true to herself until the end. All she ever wanted was to be near her daughters and their families. We love you, Mom, and we will miss you forever.
A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.
