Karli Parker and Monroe Hudnall over the summer worked on their community service project — to raise awareness on the benefits of youth sports and emphasize the proper gear for each sport. They have been out in the community raising awareness for the cause, which they both feel passionate about. They have been working hard to raise money to purchase cleats and other safety devices for underprivileged youth in the community to not only eliminate one of the leading causes of barriers in youth sports participation, but also to eliminate the risk of injury due to not having the proper gear/equipment to play safely.

Karli, as an athlete, feels very passionately that financial barriers should not affect a child’s participation in youth sports and should not put them at risk for injury that could in turn incur lifelong health issues. She feels very passionate about youth sports ensuring the utmost safety of all who participate. Karli feels that the benefits both physical and psychological of youth sports participation are so great that all children should be afforded the opportunity regardless of the socioeconomic status they were born into if they are interested in participating.

Karli and her Little Miss Spat, Monroe, have raised money over the summer with several events. They had so much fun raising awareness for their cause and preparing for their events together. Karli and Monroe loved learning more about each other and figuring out different ways to spread awareness. Karli feels that this project overall was a great opportunity for her and her Little Miss Spat to get out of their shells. They had so much fun with this project and feel so lucky to take on such an opportunity.

All proceeds were donated to the Middlesex Family YMCA so that every child has the items necessary to enjoy sports safely and confidently.

Karli is the daughter of Lamar and Kerry Parker of Christchurch. She is the granddaughter of the late Ruth Bias Thompson and Matthew Thompson of Urbanna and Amos and Sharon Ackes of Saluda. Karli attends Middlesex High School.

She enjoys all things, including sports, reading and crafting. Following high school, she plans to attend college and obtain her degree in registered nursing with an emphasis on neonatal nursing, and volunteer her free time coaching youth sports.

Monroe, Karli’s Little Miss Spat contestant, is the daughter of Miranda Newall of Hartfield and Quinton Hudnall. She is the granddaughter of the late Gregory Kimble and Alfreda Ackes of Urbanna and Keri Paige and Kisha Bunns of Church View.

Monroe attends Middlesex Elementary School. In her free time, Monroe enjoys swimming, gymnastics, playing T-ball, and feeding and cuddling her new baby brother.

When Monroe grows up, she wants to be a primary care doctor and a superstar. Karli has no doubt that Monroe will achieve both of these dreams.
