Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office revamp costs climb

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday, Oct. 1, to increase the overall cost for renovation of the old Puller Center building at Cooks Corner into a new Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office from $3.3 to $3.43 million.

Norman Company Inc. of Mechanicsville has found about $136,000 worth of issues with the old building and site that are not covered under the $3.3 million contract that was signed with the county in May. MCBS approved $66,000 in charge orders at its September meeting and another $75,000 at the October meeting.

“We do not like change orders,” said Supervisors Chairman Don Harris. “We work on a budget that we approve at the beginning of the fiscal year and we do not like it when we have to appropriate funds later in the year.”

The change orders ranged from a math correction of $843 to $38,356 additional cost to remove combustible “non-code” materials in the ceiling. Hartfield representative Bill Harris questioned why the contractor did not recognize the problem in the ceiling. “All you had to do was pull the ceiling down and look up…”
