Nathan Marshall Riggan

Nathan Marshall Riggan of Urbanna passed from this life peacefully, on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, at the age of 99 years and 10 months.

He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Christine Schaaf Riggan; his son, Robert W. Riggan (Debbie); his parents, Mary and Nathan Riggan; and his brothers, Spencer Riggan and Parker Riggan.

He is survived by his sons, David C.  Riggan (Glenna), and Steven M. Riggan (Kimberly); four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one niece, Nancy Pryor.

Marshall was born in Surry on Dec. 10, 1924, and lived there until 10 years of age, when the family moved to Richmond.

He graduated from John Marshall High School in Richmond in 1942 and served in World War II in the Army Air Corps, entering in April 1943 and deployed to the South Pacific theater as a radar operator.  He returned home at the end of the war to the U.S. on Dec. 27, 1945, and was honorably discharged Jan. 6, 1946.

Marshall was a founding partner of Allied Glass Corporation in Richmond, later serving as majority owner and president until the sale of the business in 1985.  Christine and Marshall retired to Urbanna (Remlik Hall on Robinson Creek) in 1987, remodeling a weekend cottage originally constructed in 1959, where he lived until his passing.

Marshall enjoyed boating and fishing (although he did not eat fish!), woodworking, and projects around the house. In his earlier years, he was active in the Sertoma Club in Richmond. He will be remembered for his strong, detailed memory and “Dad’s famous sayings,” short quips about life’s occurrences.

The family thanks neighbors, friends and organizations who assisted Marshall during his latter years, especially Clyde and Gayle Stewart, Otto and Maggie Brauer, Sharon Blythe, Angela Horsley, and many others.

A funeral service is planned for noon on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home. The family will receive friends, one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Middlesex Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to your preferred charity.
