Middlesex may move to centralize recycling

Middlesex Supervisors learned at its Sept. 3 regular monthly meeting that VPPSA is discussing “cost saving” recycling changes that could give Middle Peninsula counties — like Middlesex — longterm savings.

Assistant County Administrator AnnMarie Ricardi reported that at the July 18 VPPSA Middle Peninsula Oversight Committee meeting, the committee discussed the consideration of obtaining a central site to be used as a recycling distribution center in the Middle Peninsula.

“This property will be used to reduce transit time for recyclable materials,” she said. “The property will have equipment to bale cardboard and compact mixed recyclables. After baled/compacted, the materials will be stored at the center until sufficient material is accumulated to fill a transfer truck, then transferred to an appropriate recycler, or in some circumstances, picked up by the recycling company.”

To compare to current operations, for example the VPPSA truck currently picks up the cardboard container at Deltaville Convenience Center, transfers the container to a baler, hours away, then the baled equipment is transferred back to a purchaser, perhaps as close as West Point…
