Norris Bridge reduced to one lane for annual safety checks

Route 3 travelers can expect brief daytime delays crossing the Rappahannock River between Middlesex and Lancaster counties now through October as crews begin a scheduled annual inspection to see if the bridge is safe to use.

The inspection of the Robert O. Norris Jr. Memorial Bridge began Monday, Sept. 23, reported Virginia Department of Transportation senior communications specialist Alexis Breeden.

From 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. weekdays through Oct. 25, a portion of Route 3 on the bridge will be reduced to a single travel lane. Automated flagging devices will direct traffic through the work zone. Flagging crew members operate the devices, which can be rapidly adjusted to respond to congestion or incidents on the bridge, said Breeden.

Lane closures have been scheduled weather permitting, she said. Message boards at both bridge approaches will alert travelers to the upcoming inspection work zone.
