
Chargers defeat Red Devils, 36-30, in away gridiron action
The Middlesex High School (MHS) Charger football team (2-1), (0-0), defeated the Lancaster Red Devils, 36-30, in an overtime victory Friday night at Lancaster High School (LHS).
During regulation time, the game ended 30-30. The Chargers got the ball first in overtime.
Virginia High School League rules for overtime require the ball to be placed on the 10-yard line and both teams get a shot at scoring. The one with the highest score at the end of overtime wins.

Middlesex scored the winning touchdown in overtime on a fourth down when Nathan Powell tipped a pass from MHS quarterback Shane Glenn into the hands of Davonte Griffin making the score, 36-30. When Lancaster (1-2, 0-0) got the ball, the Red Devils failed to score on a fourth down run as the Charger defense held on a goal line stand.
JaQuan Griffin paced the Chargers by scoring two touchdowns — one on offense and one on defense. He scored a touchdown on an eight-yard run and on a 90-yard run when the MHS star picked up a Red Devil fumble and ran it back for a score. J. Griffin rushed for 120 yards and caught a pass for 28 yards.
The Chargers scored five touchdowns all together.
Defense
The Chargers were paced on defense by Luke McMurtrie who had nine tackles and three assists and J. Griffin, who had seven solo tackles and four assists. D. Griffin had six solo tackles, three assists and Powell had five solo tackles, one assist and one fumble recovery.
Coming up
The Chargers will take on the Rappahannock Raiders (4-0, 1-0) Friday night at Warsaw. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
