One Community Under God (OCUG) is an annual, county-wide gathering for worship, music and fellowship. This year’s event is set for 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department’s station (the Urbanna firehouse) at 335 Virginia St. in Urbanna.

There will be very special music presented by George Robinson and his Gospel Robins group. Local musician, Bunny Dunlevy, will be a featured soloist. The Rev. K. Lamar Gresham, presently a pastor in Powhatan, is directing the OCUG choir that consists of members of various churches. In addition, congregational singing will be part of this gathering.

In 2011, One Community Under God came to be with three churches. This year there are 11 churches co-hosting OCUG.

The churches invite all community members and visitors to join this year’s OCUG. Dress is casual. The hosting churches will provide a light lunch afterwards.

Saluda Baptist Church (SBC) will host its Movie Night event on Friday, Sept. 27, at 6:30 p.m. It will feature a free showing of the movie, “Unsung Hero.”

There will also be free pizza, popcorn and drinks. “Come and join us!” a spokesman for the event urged.

SBC is located at 960 General Puller Highway in Saluda.

Upcoming activities at Christ Church Parish (Episcopal) in Christchurch include a bake sale at the Wings, Wheels and Keels event on Sept. 28, participation in One Community Under God on Oct. 6,  the Blessing of the Animals service at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 13, treats for Christchurch School students after Eucharist on Oct. 29, League of Wives lecture on Nov. 10 in the St. Clare Walker Middle School auditorium, and the annual Veterans Day Luncheon and lecture at Christ Church Parish on Nov. 11 (RSVP to Barbara at 804-832-0016).

Christ Church Parish offers two services every Sunday at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Its congregants welcome everyone to attend and find out more about the vibrant community of worshipers.

The Women of Make-A-Way and Deliverance Full Gospel Baptist Church and Women of Worth (WOW) are hosting their Women’s Conference on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 100 Flats Road in Urbanna starting at 9 a.m. They are inviting all women to join them in their women’s conference.

Their theme: Woman of Worth Praisers and Worshippers of God.

The morning session starts at 9 a.m. The presenter will be Elder Hilda Dunn, co-pastor at St. Paul Baptist Church in Jamaica. The afternoon session starts at 12:30 p.m. The presenter will be Elder Faith Brooks, co-pastor at Faith Unity Fellowship Ministries, Lancaster.

Lunch will be served from 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

The Kilmarnock Seventh-day Adventist Church is having a gospel music concert on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. at the church, which is at 401 S. Main St. in Kilmarnock. There will be participants mostly from local churches in the community.  Plan to bring your family and friends and come worship with joy.

Zoar Baptist Church’s Ladies Bible Study will resume on Sept. 30 with an eight-week study of Ruth and Esther on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. All women in Middlesex County are invited to participate and enjoy this special time of worship and fellowship. Zoar adult Bible study classes meet on Sunday mornings at 9 or 9:30 a.m. They are currently studying the Book of Acts. Come visit the classes and find one that’s right for you!


A string quartet program will be presented by Strings and Things on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 5 p.m. at Urbanna Baptist Church (UBC) at 121 Watling St. in Urbanna. The theme of the concert is, “Is That a Suite or a Sweet” — The History of the Musical Suite and Playing Songs About Sweets!” The concert is free and open to the public.

Strings and Things is a network of between 20 and 25 professionally trained musicians in coastal and central Virginia. The membership represents a variety of instrumentation, including violin, viola, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, and keyboard musicians.

Rehearsals for the Chesapeake Chorale’s December concerts are scheduled for each Monday, 7-9 p.m., through November in preparation for Christmas concerts, including at St. Clare Walker Middle School on Dec. 8 at 3 p.m.

No audition is required to join this mixed-voice community group, organized in 1996, and dedicated to promoting choral music, particularly in area schools. All proceeds from concerts are donated back to school music programs.

All those community members who enjoy singing and sharing the Christmas message, come join them at 7 p.m. Mondays at Grace Episcopal.
