Phone ban expected to improve MC students learning, mental health

Cell phones are being restricted in all three Middlesex County public schools this school year to comply with an executive order of Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, reported Middlesex County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Tracy Seitz at the school board meeting Monday, Sept. 9.

At the start of the school year, school policy does not allow cell phone use at any of the schools from “bell to bell.” Middlesex Elementary School and St. Clare Walker Middle School have an “off and away” policy. Students can carry cell phones to school, but during the day they have to be turned off and stored away — either in a backpack, purse or locker.

Middlesex High School students can also bring cell phones to school, but at the start of each class phones are physically turned over to teachers and then given back to students at the end of each class time.

The Middlesex County School Board has until January 2025 to approve a final “policy and procedures” set of student cell phone restrictions…
