Martha Cavin Muth

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Martha Cavin Muth in July 2024.

Born in Omaha, Neb. to Jim and Jean Cavin, Martha was raised in Illinois, Virginia and Breckenridge, Colo., where the family located in 1971.

Martha excelled at skiing and raced in her youth. Her love of nature, gardening, birds, skiing, mountains and oceans drew her to the outdoor lifestyle all of her life. Martha highly valued music, concerts, and time with family and friends.

Martha graduated from Arizona State in Tempe, studying French and Linguistics, and received her master’s degree in International Affairs from American University in Washington, D.C. Her career varied widely, from the Agence France-Presse as a photo editor and captioner, to managing Breckenridge-area businesses, supervising nuclear waste disposal contracts for the U.S. Government, and having a company of her own, Complex Systems Group.

In college she met Jim Muth, and they married and raised their daughter Kelly in Breckenridge and Bozeman, Mont.

Martha was an instant friend with a big smile that welcomed everyone. She was blessed with grace and love that was passed to all that came into contact with her. Martha was smart, wise, talented and generous, and will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Martha is survived by her daughter, Kelly Watson (Chris), husband Jim Muth; sister, Sarah Gordon; brother, Christopher Cavin (Lisa); mother, Jean Cavin; and her nieces and nephew.

Martha is preceded in death by her father, James B. Cavin.

Donations in Martha’s memory may be made to The Audubon Society or The Nature Conservancy.
