A tractor-trailer carrying logs overturned on U.S. Route 17 about a mile north of Saluda on Monday afternoon.

The driver, Dominek Broaddus, 27 of Tappahannock, was seriously injured and was flown by helicopter to VCU Medical Center, said Sgt. J Dudley of the Virginia State Police’s Gloucester Office. He was in stable condition on Monday evening, said Sgt. Dudley.

According to the police report, the tractor-trailer loaded with logs was traveling south in the left lane of Rt. 17 and overturned at Braxton-Corr Road (Rt. 615), which is about one-quarter mile north of Town Bridge Road. The truck slid into the median and ended up on its side with the cab facing north. The logs were scattered south of the truck

Authorities were dispatched at 2:56 p.m. and the investigation continues, said Sgt. Dudley.

Witness

A witness who was traveling south on Route 17 came upon the crash soon after it occurred. Gordon White of Deltaville said the engine was still running on the overturned truck and the driver was still inside. White and another passing motorist provided fire extinguishers to put out a small fire on the engine.

John Page, who lives about a half mile from the crash site, was outside working and heard a loud boom as the crash happened.

Rt. 17 south was closed for at least three hours and traffic was detoured around the crash. Page said Route 17 south was still closed at 6:30 p.m.
