Supervisors mull harvesting timber

Middlesex Supervisors are considering harvesting timber on 35 acres of county-owned surplus property between Cooks Corner and Saluda and then gifting it to the Middlesex County Economic Development Authority.

The county purchased a 30-acre tract of land in 2006 for $94,000 for sewage treatment usage. The plan, however, to discharge treated sewage through the property with the effluent going into Urbanna Creek changed and the property has been left alone for regrowth of trees.

The 30-acre tract was expanded in 2022 when the board purchased 5.41 acres for $99,000 that connects the properties and fronts on General Puller Highway (Route 33).

During the board’s conversation on Tuesday, Sept. 3, concerning timbering the property, Jamaica District Supervisor Wayne Jessie noted that the land was one of the county vacant properties that the EDA had shown interest in for “some type” of development.

EDA Executive Director Trent Funkhouser said in a phone interview this week that the EDA has shown interest in this property for future development, but there is no “specific use” being considered…
