Despite competitive first half, MHS falls to Northumberland

Chargers to take on Windsor in away action Friday

The Middlesex High School (MHS) Chargers (0-1, 0-0) fell Friday to the Northumberland High School (NHS) Indians, 34-13, in the football season opener at MHS’s Syd Thrift Athletic Complex, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

Barring a series of sloppy penalties by both teams, the first half of play was competitive. Middlesex scored first on a nine-yard run by senior halfback JaQuan Griffin with 8:56 on the clock in the first quarter. Shane Glenn was good on the extra point kick and it was a 7-0 MHS lead.

The Indians came back and scored two touchdowns in the first quarter but failed on an extra point kick and a 2-point run conversion attempt. The MHS defense in the first half was tough and caused several turnovers that stalled Indian potential scoring drives.

With 10:40 left in the second quarter, MHS’s JaQuan Griffin recovered a fumble to stall a potential scoring drive. The Chargers drove down to the two-yard line only to fumble and give the ball back to the Indians. Northumberland took over the ball only to fumble on the Charger’s 25-yard line. Middlesex was still unable to capitalize on the score board. The half ended with a 12-7 score with NHS on top.

Coming up

Middlesex will travel to Windsor High School (1-1, 0-0) this Friday, Sept. 13, to take on the Dukes. The Chargers hope to avenge last year’s 34-23 loss to the Dukes. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Windsor won its Aug. 29 season opener versus Arcadia 35-27 and lost Sept. 5 to King and Queen Central, 20-12.
