Ruby Christine Hibble Shackelford passed into the loving arms of her heavenly father on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024.
Ruby was born in Christchurch on Jan. 28, 1929 to Maxwell Cary Hibble and Mary Magdalene Hibble. She had one sister, Mary Maxine Hibble Williams.
The family moved to Urbanna in 1942. Ruby met her husband, James Willie Shackelford, at the bowling alley in Urbanna and they were married on Jan. 31, 1945, until his death on March 12, 2006.
In addition to her husband, Ruby was predeceased by her father, mother and sister.
Ruby was employed at the Urbanna Public Library for 27 years. She was also a Middlesex election official for 20 years. She was a member of the Urbanna Rescue Squad Auxiliary and volunteered at the Second Time Around (formerly The Nearly New Shop), as well as the Library Thrift Shop. Ruby was a loving and faithful member of Urbanna United Methodist Church.
Ruby is survived by her daughter, Linda Jean Shackelford Ferguson; and son, James Cary Shackelford, and his wife, Virginia Shealy Shackelford (Ginger); her five grandchildren, Valerie Reeves (Frank), Sarah Ferguson (Darryl), James C. Shackelford Jr. (Tammy), William E. Shackelford and Stephanie Spires. She is also survived by her eight great-grandchildren, Landon Reeves, Madison Shackelford, Ruby Shackelford and Raylee, Mia, Lauryn, Onix and Luke Spires; and many other relatives, nieces, nephews and friends whom she cherished.
A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Urbanna United Methodist Church, 221 Marston Ave., Urbanna. Interment will follow the service at Christ Church Parish (Episcopal), 56 Christchurch Lane, Christchurch. A reception will follow the interment at the Urbanna United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
