Hartfield shooting club names September speaker

The Middlesex Shooting Sports Club recently announced its September monthly dinner meeting speaker, who goes by the alias Constable Heartless, purporting to being born around 1640 in England. The meeting is set for 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2, at the Middlesex Shooting Sports Club’s clubhouse at 1860 Twiggs Ferry Road in Hartfield.

“Constable Heartless”

According to a shooting club news release, Constable Heartless said he never knew his parents, surmising they died in the English Civil War. Heartless’ earliest memories are of the violent streets of London, near the ports of commerce. As a young child he stowed away on the merchant vessel “Angel.” Not but a day passed before his discovery. He was brought before the ship’s captain and feared for his life, for he knew the captain had the right to throw him overboard, or hang him by the neck on the ship’s mast — either sure to bring an end to his young life. Fortunately, the captain, instead of deposing of Heartless gave him the opportunity to serve as a cabin boy and “powder monkey.”

Thus began the shooting club’s speaker’s life of sailing the seas for the remainder of his days. Alas, Heartless’ story is long and seemingly older than the sea itself.

You are welcome to hear more about who the news release describes as “this remarkably spry and sound of mind man of 384 years himself,” by coming to the club’s Sept. 2 dinner and speaker parley. The cost is $25 per person, including dessert and beverage, comfortably less than a gold doubloon.

The event’s dinner will be prepared by the club’s chef, Andre Smith, who knows food and how to make it taste better than it was meant to. For September, guests have a choice of entrée of chicken pasta Alfredo or pepperoni and cheese calzone, served with garden fresh salad, vegetable medley and dinner rolls.

The Middlesex Shooting Sports Club is a not-for-profit organization. A portion of the dinner’s proceeds will go to supporting youth and women’s shooting sports training and education.
