The Marion Robins Circle of Forest Chapel United Methodist Church will host a free back-to-school movie on Saturday, Aug. 10, at Forest Chapel United Methodist Church, 303 Forest Chapel Road, Saluda.

Children from kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to attend from 4-6 p.m. The PG-rated movie is “The Dog That Saved Summer.”
There will also be a back-to-school craft, hot dogs, drinks, and of course popcorn is provided.

Organizers ask that one adult per family remain during the event. To reserve your child’s or children’s spot, call or text your name and number of children attending to 804-286-2442.


The Knights of Columbus, Council 11210 will host its 15th Italian Feast on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Catholic Church of the Visitation on General Puller Highway (Route 33) in Topping.
Seating is at 5 p.m. The dinner will include homemade meatballs, made with pork, beef and veal, Italian sweet sausages, homemade sauce and Penne pasta. Fresh Italian bread, salad and hand grated Reggiano Parmesan cheese will top off the food menu. Homemade desserts will complete the feast.

Red and white wine, coffee and tea will complement the meal.

Reservations are required and tickets are priced at $35 per adult, $5 for children 11 and younger, and children 5 and younger are free. Take outs will be available by pre-order.

The Pastor’s Aide Committee of Make-A-Way and Deliverance Full Gospel Baptist Church, 100 Flats Road, Urbanna, will be taking pre-orders for spaghetti dinners, garlic bread, side salad, cookies and drink for a donation of $10 beginning today, Thursday, Aug. 1, through Thursday Aug. 15.

When you place your order, give them a time when you plan on picking up your dinner so it can be hot and ready for you.

Dinners can be picked up Saturday, Aug. 17, between 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Urbanna Baptist Church invites you to attend this Sunday, Aug. 4, worship service at Bethpage Camp-Resort. All campers, local community members and visitors are welcome to enjoy this fellowship. The gathering meets at the campground’s amphitheater at 9 a.m.; dress is casual. In case of rain, go to Bethpage’s rally center.

The Rev. Dr. Andrea Robinson of Zion Baptist Church, Mathews, will speak. Jubal, a Middlesex County-based worship band, will provide the music.

Congregants at Lower United Methodist Church (LUMC), 120 Lower Church Road, Hartfield, hope everyone will join them for worship this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Their guest speaker will be Sue Hardman.

The LUMC Administrative Council will meet Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 6 p.m.

The LUMC Worship Committee will meet Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 6:30 p.m.

The seminar, “Loss of a Spouse,” is set for noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at Urbanna Baptist Church at 121 Watling St. in Urbanna. The seminar is for people grieving a spouse’s death and features a video with practical, encouraging advice from counselors, pastors, and widowed men and women, followed by a small-group sharing time.

“You’ll learn what to expect in the days ahead, how to handle the loneliness, what to do with your spouse’s belongings, and how to find the strength to go on,” said the Rev. Nell Robinson, who will lead the seminar.

Everyone who attends receives a booklet with more than 30 short readings on how to live with grief and eventually rebuild their lives.
The cost is $10.

Zion Hill Baptist Church, 10256 Indian Road, Gloucester, will have in-person worship service on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 10 a.m. The Rev. Karol Hopson will preach and the Senior Choir will sing.

In-person Sunday school will be offered at 8:45 a.m.

The Women’s Ministry will have its Women Empowered To Grow In Christ Retreat and Conference from Friday, Sept. 13, through Sunday, Sept. 15, at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Williamsburg. The conference will be conducted on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 9:30 a.m. The cost for tickets, which includes lunch, is $30 (ages 13 and older) and $15 (ages 12 and younger).

Mark your calendars for another Tech Day at Christ Church Parish (Episcopal) in Middlesex County’s Christchurch community, near Saluda. The event will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the parish hall. Christ Church is sponsoring this event to benefit the Middlesex community.

During Tech Day, attendees can come in with their technology-related questions. Organizers encourage you to bring your devices.

Additionally, there will be educational sessions starting at the top and bottom of each hour, covering various technology topics. The schedule for the education sessions is as follows:

  • 2 p.m. — Password Management / IOS Share.
  • 2:30 p.m. — Artificial Intelligence Demo.
  • 3 p.m. — End of Life Planning.
  • 3:30 p.m. — Phishing Scams / Malware / Secure Email.

Calvary Baptist Church of Saluda has scheduled a special celebration to mark the 30th pastor anniversary of the Rev. Paul S. Pleasants and First Lady Shelia Pleasants. It is set for 5 p.m.-midnight Sept. 21 at the Marriott City Center, 740 Town Center Drive, Newport News.

Grafton Baptist Church’s celebration of the 10th anniversary of its pastor, the Rev. Lewis H. Johnson Sr., is set for Sunday, Sept. 8. It will include morning worship at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Lawrencine Smith, associate pastor, Good Shepherd Baptist Church, bringing the message.

The celebration will continue with a banquet at 2 p.m. at The Beacon, 2733 Grey’s Point Road, Topping.

Are you ready for the end of summer and school to start?

Harmony Grove Baptist Church (HGBC) is ready and waiting to help the children in the community to be prepared to succeed by providing basic school supplies at a free, annual pre-school event, “Back-to-School Blast 2024.”

On Saturday, Aug. 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., HGBC and the Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department will co-host the event at the church. HGBC is located at the intersection of General Puller Highway (Route 33) and Grey’s Point Road (Route 3) in Harmony Village near Topping. Children of kindergarten through grade six ages are invited to enjoy hotdogs, drinks, popcorn, cookies, snow cones and games for all ages, to include water games.

Immanuel Baptist Church, Saluda, will offer a revival service today, Thursday, Aug. 1. The Rev. Dr. Robert Diggs, pastor of Good Shepherd Baptist Church, Petersburg, will be the revivalist.

Praise and Worship will begin at 7 p.m., the service will begin at 7:30 p.m. and The Preached Word is at 8 p.m.

Music will be provided by various singing groups.


Upcoming activities at Christ Church Parish (Episcopal) in Christchurch include the collection of school supplies for students in the community, participation in “Wings, Wheels, and Keels” on Sept. 28, and participation in “One Community Under God” on Oct. 6.

Its newest event will be offered on Sunday, Sept. 8, at noon. The church’s annual homecoming potluck luncheon will be offered to welcome back former members who live out of town, current members and new members.

Escobrook Baptist Church in King and Queen County will celebrate homecoming on Aug. 4 at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Arthur K. Roane will bring The Preached Word for the morning. Dinner will be served immediately following the morning worship.

The  afternoon service will begin at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. John Wright, pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church in Saluda, along with the Rev. Dr. Wright’s church family.

A revival is set for Tuesday-Thursday, Aug. 6-8. Speakers include, Tuesday, Elder Alexander Parsons  of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Barnsville; Wednesday, the Rev. Virginia Young, pastor of Zion Baptist Church in King and Queen County; and Thursday, Bishop Carlton B. Johnson, pastor of Zion Branch Baptist Church in Saluda.

Philippi Christian Church in Deltaville is offering an experimental program called “Disciples Anonymous,” Mondays at 6:30 p.m. in Deltaville and Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in Urbanna.

The locations will be announced later. It’s a safe and confidential place for participants to seek spiritual solutions to overwhelming problems or situations by following the way of Jesus Christ.

Zoar Baptist Church has begun its summer schedule. Join them for “beach worship” at 8:30 a.m. near Stingray Point each Sunday through Labor Day (weather permitting). A morning worship service in the church sanctuary is also offered at 10:30 a.m. Children’s Church meets in the pavilion at the beach property at 8:30 a.m. throughout the summer. Children’s activities during the 10:30 a.m. worship service will resume in September.

Adult Sunday school classes are studying of the book of Acts. Several classes will remain near Stingray Point after beach worship for Sunday school, and others will meet at the church at 9:30 a.m.

Every Wednesday night the Community Youth Group meets in the fellowship hall of Zoar Baptist Church in Deltaville from 6-8 p.m. Group members are served dinner, have game time and study verses in the Bible after watching a video. All sixth through 12th grade students are welcome to join the group. They currently have 20 to 30 teens participating.
