‘Bak N Da Day’ to bring Soul to Deltaville this Sunday

Bak N Da Day” brings Soul to Maritime Park: Thanks to the donation from Powell’s Marina in Deltaville, vocal quintet “Bak N Da Day” will bring its rock harmonies to the DMM’s waterfront stage for a special “pop up” concert this month. It is set for 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11. (Contributed)

The soul group “Bak N Da Day” will take the stage for Deltaville Maritime Museum’s next pop-up concert on Sunday, Aug. 11, 3-5 p.m.

In 2019, the Deltaville Maritime Museum (DMM) and its adjacent Holly Point Nature Park began a new performing arts series at DMM’s waterfront. The format allows the partnering of DMM and performing artists in all genres to present varied and engaging performances.

“Get up and dance – swing, boogie, twist, slop, mashed potato, boogaloo, cha-cha and even slow drag,” the group’s website urges. “Put on your dancing shoes or just listen and take a trip down memory lane with Richmond’s quintessential oldies vocal group.”

Founded in 1999, Bak N Da Day consists of bass and founder, Russell Bennett; baritone, Anthony Harris; second tenor Jeffrey Goode, and first tenors Larry Jones and Larry Everette. It was Bennett’s desire to fulfill a longtime dream of singing with an aggregation of colleagues and friends who have fun crooning those evergreens from a time when you could “understand the words.” They draw their material from a repertoire of close to 100 songs, spanning the 50s, 60s and 70s. They are masters of vocal group harmony, encompassing several musical genres including Doo-Wop, Motown and Philly Soul. They are able to replicate a variety of sounds since each member is proficient at singing lead.

The group has a dynamic sound and has quite a reputation for being sharp dressers with slick routines. They have performed at many events, hotels and clubs in and around Richmond. They have opened for acts such as Howard Hewitt, Stephanie Mills and the O’Jays.

“Bak N Da Day “ has many fans, so get your tickets early. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door,

Deltaville Maritime Museum (DMM) and its adjacent Holly Point Nature Park continues its market season on Saturday, Aug. 24. As you all know, we now have plenty of produce vendors at the Holly Point Market vendor mix. The day is more than just produce as art, crafts, peanuts, photographs, live music, model trains, hot food, and a wealth of unusual items fill the market. Live music begins at 10 a.m. in DMM’s events pavilion and DMM opens early at 9 a.m. with donation only admission.

Captain Pete Cardozo and the free Jackson Creek Discovery Cruises will begin at 10 a.m. on DMM’s Pierwalk on Mill Creek. Folks are coming from all over Virginia to get a chance to ride on an authentic Deltaville deadrise. All cruises in 2024 will be on DMM’s newly acquired deadrise, “Jennie May.” The National Landmark “F.D. Crockett” will open for tours on the Pierwalk at 10 a.m. Check out the current “build” project,  which will be on display at DMM’s boat shop beginning at 10 a.m.

Vendors in arts, crafts, photographs, peanuts, “one-of- a-kinds” and much more line the shady arbors of the park. You can even buy windows for your house.

Although it has only happened twice since the Groovin’ in the Park series’ 2009 beginning, I always regret it when we have to make change in our Groovin’ schedule, but I have heard from the popular “Stuck on a Name,” our Reggae band who were scheduled to headline our Aug. 24 Groovin’ 6-8 p.m., and, due to circumstance beyond their control, they will not be able to take the stage this year.

However, the good news is, our local bluegrass band, “Rappahannock Crossing,” featuring Pinetop District Supervisor Randy Crittenden, will take their place on the waterfront stage. Can’t wait to hear “Orange Blossom Special.” Gary Archer of “Jumbo Lump Daddy” and his band, “Members,” will open at 5 p.m. We welcome them all to Groovin’.

Breakfast sandwiches will be served at DMM’s tea house beginning at 8:30 a.m. with hot dogs grilling at 10 a.m. Bloody Mary, mimosas and screwdriver cocktails will all be available at the bar. Check out our new “Orange Smash” available at Groovin’. Keep an eye on the Sentinel for other changes as we approach Aug. 24.

If you are from out of town, check out our Middlesex Visitors Center in DMM’s lobby. It helps with easy access to all of Middlesex’s many attractions of history, watersports and other events.

If you are a vendor and would like to participate in the Holly Point Market next year or the upcoming Taste of Middlesex Festival or the Holiday Gift Market, call DMM or check out our online application on our website.

Groovin’ in the Park is a “bring your own lawn chair, cooler and picnic” event. Gates open at 4 p.m., rain or shine. There’s plenty of convenient parking and there is convenient “drop-off” at the gate.

Tickets for this Groovin’ are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. Children younger than 12 are free. Get yours at the DMM office, on DMM’s website or at Nauti Nell’s store in Deltaville.

Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park, a volunteer, all-donation, nonprofit organization, is located in Deltaville at 287 Jackson Creek Road. To get to DMM, follow General Puller Highway (Route 33) east through Deltaville and turn right across from the Chris Mart Citgo convenience store. The park is open dawn to dusk daily. Boat and marine equipment donations welcome.
