Jamaica’s Guillotte writes book about her journey

Most folks know Susan Guillotte of Jamaica as the longtime and now retired postal worker from either Church View or Urbanna post offices, but few know that she has had a lifelong love of writing and recently published her first book.

Guillotte, 71, started writing when she was in high school in Newport News researching and tracing her roots. Her years of research have resulted in her book entitled, “Bunny,” that speaks to her life journey, and the joys, and trials and tribulations she has experienced as an adopted child.”

Bunny is based on the true story of Guillotte’s life and is set in the 1950s in the North and in the segregated 1960s South. “I was adopted from the Midwest and brought to Newport News, Virginia, where my adopted parents lived,” she said. “Bunny is the story of my experiences, emotions and the journey I took to find out who I am and where I came from.”

“Since I wrote the book, I’ve discovered that many people who were adopted have similar feelings and want to know more about their past,” she said.

Using newspaper clippings, old phone directories, census reports, hundreds of phone calls and letters written to relatives and contacts of relatives — and with most going nowhere — she pressed forward.

“I kept asking myself why do I keep doing this — searching and searching? What do I want out of this? In the end, I wanted to get some peace in my life, I needed to know where I came from,” she said.

Anyone who is adopted, who gave up a child for adoption, or knows someone living in that special reality will love this unforgettable story.
