Owen Guest, 17, of Mechanicsville won the 13th Deltaville 5K Saturday, finishing in 17 minutes, eight seconds. “I didn’t expect to win,” Guest said following the race.

Leading the 400-plus pack of runners during the Deltaville 5K Saturday are the race’s eventual top finishers. “Usually there are a lot more faster people. I just came to have fun. But about a mile in I felt good and thought I could win, so I decided to go for it.” Wiley Mulholland, 17, of Henrico captured second place, with a 17:24 time.

But Middlesex County runners also fared well in the race, with three Middlesex High School students — Thomas Dobb, Gunnar Marston and Cameron Lambert — all finishing in the top-10 in the field of 416 runners. Dobb, 17, of Urbanna placed sixth with a 18:29 time, Marston, 16, of Gloucester was seventh with a 18:43 time and Lambert, 17, of Hartfield was ninth with a 18:51 time.

Olivia Hill, 27, of Martinsburg, W. Va., was the top female finisher with a 19:34 time. “It was very hot and humid,” Hill said following the race. “But it was super fun — everyone was very encouraging and it was a good race.” Hill had alluded to the morning’s near 100-degree heat index, which many runners said put going for a course record out of reach.

The course record set last year by Evan Leach was 15 minutes, 20 seconds, nearly two minutes faster than this year’s top time.

The 3.1-mile Independence Day-themed foot race, which starts and finishes in front of the Deltaville Community Association (DCA) building and mostly uses stretches of General Puller Highway and Lovers Lane for its route, is a DCA fundraiser that helps maintain the DCA’s various community facilities.

This year’s 5K and Children’s Fun Run had a combined total of 516 registered participants, according to Event Chairman Lud Kimbrough, who said that was likely the most participants in about a decade. There were also 30-plus volunteers and 36 sponsors.

“This important fundraising activity supports all services of the Deltaville Community Association for the community,” Kimbrough said in an email to the Sentinel. “We patronize our sponsors and are incredibly grateful to our event volunteers.”

Kimbrough then went on to name the volunteers — registration, Amanda and Piper Ward, Amelia Reynolds, Piper Ames, Arabella Thorne, Bev Kidd, Bonnie Armentrout, Carol White, Lillian Fahnestock, Jennifer White, Brittin Payne; crowd control and entertainment, Conley Clark Laster IV, Wayne Jessie Sr., Gary Archer, Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office, Lower Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department, Jacqui and Heidi Ruse and family, Middle Peninsula YMCA; facilities, Ellen Beauchamp, Gail and Bev Butler, Randy Blue, Stephen Blue, Theresa Linn, Gail and Weston Spivey; marketing and leadership, Susan Lukens, Amanda Ward, Jennifer White, Raynell Smith; race course management, Walden’s Construction, Gail and Bev Butler, John Hooper, John Grossenbacher, Katie McCue, Chris McCue, Mac McCue, Ron Deck, Trip Phillips, Maggie McNeil, Kim Cheshire, Sue Sylvia, Tara and David Hunter, Lina Butler and the Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad. “Surely we have inadvertently overlooked someone, but thank you sincerely from the bottom of our hearts,” Kimbrough said.
