During a ceremony Saturday at Christ Church Parish (Episcopal), a new Christ Church Virginia highway road marker was dedicated on General Puller Highway (Route 33) as about 40 people attended the event.
Christ Church (Church of England) Parish was formed in 1666. At that time, the ancient Piankatank and Lancaster parishes in what was then Lancaster County were combined and relegated to “Chapel of Eases.” Christ Church was named the “Mother Church.” Middlesex was part of Lancaster County starting in 1651 and until 1668 when the Virginia Assembly approved the split.
The new Christ Church highway road marker replaced a similar sign that was erected at Cooks Corner in the late 1920s at the very beginning of the Virginia highway marker program. The old sign at Cooks Corner was taken down last week.
