Deltaville preps for big 5K race

Richmonder Evan Leach (No. 488), 23, rockets his way down General Puller Highway moments after the start Saturday of the 12th Deltaville 5K. He went on to win, setting a course record. No. 406, Jordan Bendura, last year’s winner, and this year’s runner-up, runs at Leach’s side. The University of Richmond cross country teammates dueled for the lead throughout the race. Hundreds will participate in the 13th running of the Deltaville 5K and Kids Fun Run set for Saturday, July 6, starting and finishing in front of the Deltaville Community Association building in Deltaville.

The Kids Fun Run for children 12 and younger will start at 7:15 a.m., immediately followed by the Deltaville 5K, a 3.1-mile foot race through Deltaville, which is expected to start around 7:30 a.m.

Online registration will remain open through Friday, July 5. Walk-up registration is available during packet pickup at the event site from 4-7 p.m. Friday, July 5, and 6-7 a.m. Saturday, July 6.

The family-friendly, rain-or-shine event is a great way to celebrate Independence Day.

There will be crab races during the event. The Middlesex Family YMCA will host a children’s corral for any parents needing child care while they race. Event festivities will conclude after the awards ceremony, so folks can return to their holiday activities.

Returning for 2024 is the fan-favorite and U.S. Track and Field-certified Jackson Creek course, which includes a turnaround on the state dock over Jackson Creek. There will be staggered starts for racers of all levels, offering runners the opportunity to post fast finishing times and great fun for walkers — many of whom show up in red, white, and blue patriotic-themed costumes to add to the fun.

This year’s race T-shirt design celebrates the 100th birthday of the Deltaville Maritime Museum’s famed flagship buyboat, F.D. Crockett – a priceless piece of local history. Get a boost with coffee and cinnamon rolls available at the event.

Volunteers needed

“If people would like to volunteer, they can email me at svheyman1@gmail.com or call me at 804-824-4524,” Race Director Susan Heyman Lukens said. “We have most volunteer spots filled, but always need more help and I’m sure some people would love to race instead of volunteer! I would also love to have people’s numbers for future years.”
