The opening of the Marshall Community Pool on May 25 marked the realization of one of the larger projects completed in the Town of Urbanna and its citizens.
Building a $1.2 million pool was a community effort — a public-private partnership from the beginning. There were many hurdles to cross. Obstacles were pushed aside as the project gained momentum.
A dream of many, the 75 yard long pool is Middlesex County’s only pool for competitive swim teams — a place where youngsters will learn to swim and people of all ages will exercise.
The gleaming new pool is a reflection of a community spirit that has been in Urbanna for generations. It’s a spirit that has worked for decades for “the betterment of the entire community,” said Urbanna native, historian and town council member Larry Chowning during Saturday’s pool dedication ceremony.
Taber Park, where the pool stands, was the very site of a school built by the community about 100 years ago. When the school closed in 1962, the land went to the Town of Urbanna and became Taber Park.
The Marshall Community Pool is a tribute to community spirit and a gift to generations to come, said Chowning.
