F.D. Crockett birthday party at the Deltaville Maritime Museum

Deltaville Maritime Museum’s beloved F.D. Crockett (Contributed)

Celebration set for June 15 and 16

The F.D. Crockett, the flagship of the Deltaville Maritime Museum (DMM) and the only log buyboat in Virginia, is a century old this year.

During the third weekend in June, the Deltaville Maritime Museum will celebrate the rich maritime history the F.D. Crockett has kept alive, the tradition of wooden boatbuilding, and the watermen who worked her. Her restoration project, much like the annual Family Boatbuilding Week, is at the core of the DMM Maritime Park’s mission.

On Saturday, June 15, DMM is hosting a family reunion honoring this historic vessel and those families that built, owned, or worked the F.D. Crockett for its first 80 years. We are also honoring the volunteers and supporters who restored and preserved her for the past 20. If you are a supporter who would like to contribute to the endowment and be included in the covered dish family reunion, please call the museum for details. Space is limited.

On Sunday, June 16, the general public is invited to join us at an afternoon of birthday celebration for the whole community. From 1:30 to 3 p.m., the public is invited to join us at the park for an open house aboard the F.D. Crockett and creek cruises aboard the Jennie May, complete with birthday cake for this century old vessel. The museum will be open for visitors to learn more about the boat and its history.

The afternoon will conclude with Barefoot Davis and his Island Band on tour from the Caribbean playing in concert from 3 to 5 p.m. This is a special concert to support the F.D. Crockett 100th Birthday Preservation Endowment — it is not a Groovin’ in the Park concert. Admission is $10 in advance and $15 at the gate, which opens at 2 p.m. Additional donations to the endowment will be welcomed. Join us for a relaxed afternoon in the park.
