One hundred plus bicyclists recognize fallen MC deputy

The annual arrival on Friday, May 10, of the Police Unity Tour in Urbanna brought more than 100 bicyclists to town honoring the late Lt. Robert Talmadge Hicks, who died when his police cruiser went off the Beryl R. Newman Memorial Bridge in May 1984. (Photo by Larry Chowning)

The annual Police Unity Tour bicyclists stopped at the Middlesex County Volunteer Fire Department building in Urbanna on Friday, May 10, on the way to Washington, D.C., to honor fallen first responders.

The group comes to Urbanna annually to honor the late Middlesex County Chief Deputy Robert Talmadge Hicks. The Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) lieutenant drowned when his police cruiser ran off the Beryl R. Newman Memorial (Urbanna) Bridge on May 20, 1984.

The 250-mile ride, which started in Portsmouth, is designed to raise awareness about police officers who have died in the line of duty and to raise money for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in the nation’s capital.
