Reps from MC museums to participate in market

Late Deltaville resident Steve Smith (a.k.a. Kaptain Krunch), a Deltaville Maritime Museum founding member, sails the Explorer shortly after its construction with her first square rig. Cherry Point is visible to the right and Stingray Point is unseen to the left. This picture is from 2008 during the Explorer’s many voyages and travels to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown. The queen of England attended the ceremonies.(Contributed)

The huge Memorial Day Holly Point market is fast approaching at the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park.

This will be a big one with the Tidewater Oyster Growers Association (TOGA) with their “spat” and aquaculture items sale and a full slate of vendors. There will be children’s fun activities and a morning of “open microphone” fun for your listening pleasure.

The Museums of Middlesex (MOM) will also be on hand with the 1608 John Smith replica shallop, “Explorer,” to highlight Middlesex County’s rich history. Volunteers will be on hand to tell not only that history, but about building the replica shallop, about Captain John Smith, his explorations, and how Stingray Point got its name.

The four partnering museums and foundations are the Middlesex County Museum and Historical Society in Saluda, the Urbanna Scottish Factor Store Museum and Visitors Center in Urbanna, the Colonial Seaport Foundation (CSF) and the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park in Deltaville.

You can check out MOM’s website online anytime at www.museumsofmiddlesex.com.
