The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) approved on Tuesday, April 2, authorizing staff to apply for a Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) grant to remove “abandoned or derelict” vessels from county waters.
Matt Walker wrote in a staff report that “Bryan Miller of Miller Marine in Deltaville and Baxter Phillips, chairman of Keep Middlesex Beautiful Committee, determined that there are likely less than 10 boats to be removed and very likely no more than 15.
The report stated that Gloucester County participated in the program and it is estimated that it cost Gloucester about $7,000 per boat to have abandoned and derelict boats removed from its waters.
Hartfield District Supervisor Bill Harris encouraged the board to apply for the VMRC funds because the program “might” go away. “This is a real problem in the county and we need to be pro-active in finding ways to remove these boats,” he said.
The board voted unanimously to apply for the VMRC funds before a June deadline.
