The annual Independence Day fireworks in Urbanna have hit a snag — but a barge could be the solution.
For years the fireworks have been launched from the Rosegill property across Urbanna Creek. However, the property owners’ insurance will not cover the discharge of fireworks, reported Urbanna Town Administrator Ted Costin to the town council on March 14.
Some localities use a barge anchored in water to shoot off the fireworks. However, the barge would need to be 40 feet by 60 feet, Costin said.
A barge of that size would need a tug to move it.
The town has a contract for the fireworks show, but that operator will not shoot from a barge, said Costin.
However, the Ohio based company that has put on the fireworks for Urbanna before is willing and able to shoot from a barge, he said.
