The Middlesex County School Board (MCSB) approved a $23,006,450 school budget Monday, March 11, to be sent to the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors for approval.
The general fund budget is $21,889,198; school food funds, $796,629; textbook funds, $184,161; and capital improvement fund, $136,462. The county’s portion of the budget is $13,909,596, a 5% increase over last year. The state of Virginia is expected to fund $7,021,945; federal funds, $876,853; and $80,804 from “other” funding mostly from grants and other outside revenues. The state portion is slightly higher this year because school population is estimated to go up, one of the gauges used to determine state funding.
The budget calls for a “step” increase in pay for teachers and employees that amounts to a 1.3% increase in pay; the purchase of a new diesel school bus costing $136,462; an increase of 2% in health insurance; and an increase in bus maintenance costs.
The state budget has been passed by the House and Senate, but has not been signed by the governor. At the meeting, school superintendent Dr. Tracy Seitz reported that there is a possible 3% raise tied to the state’s budget for Standard of Quality (SOQ) positions. This could increase state funding.
