Its Class 1 boys basketball opponent in
semi-final goes on to win state title
The Lancaster High School (LHS) Red Devils retained the state basketball title Thursday, March 7, by defeating Auburn, 65-59, to become the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 1 state champion for the second year in a row.
The Red Devils and Auburn squared off in the Siegel Center at Virginia Community University in Richmond. Auburn was ahead at halftime, 33-28, and held a lead until near the end of the fourth quarter when the Red Devils took a 60-59 lead. LHS hit five unanswered points in the waning seconds of the game to gain the 65-59 win.
The Red Devils defeated George Wythe (Roanoke), 62-40 last year, to win the VHSL Class 1 state championship in 2023. It had been 18 years since LHS had won a state basketball title.
The Middlesex High School Chargers lost to the Red Devils, 63-53, in the state semi-finals of the VHSL Class 1 state basketball tournament played at New Kent High School on Friday, March 1.
The Chargers reached the semi-finals of the state tournament with a 73-66 win in the quarterfinals of the tournament beating Carver College and Career Academy. Middlesex ended one of its best basketball seasons in years with a 19-6, 10-2 win-loss record.
